We’re thrilled to announce our first annual Tree Awards. We know how much love and care you put into building your family trees, and we think it’s about time you got some recognition for all your hard work. With that in mind, we’re giving you an extra incentive to throw yourself into the spirit of Start Your Family Tree Week, with some wonderful prizes up for grabs.

Don’t worry, you needn’t be a seasoned historian to enter. We’ve split the awards in half, with two categories aimed at beginners – those of you starting your family tree this week - and two aimed at experienced genealogists. Our expert panel of judges, including Findmypast historians and editor of Who Do You Think You Are Magazine, Sarah Williams will be judging the entries on the criteria set out below.

It’s so easy to enter. Just email competition@findmypast.co.uk, stating the category you’re entering clearly in the subject line, and include a link to your tree in the email body. If you’ve built your tree elsewhere, simply upload your Gedcom file to Findmypast, then send us the link. You can read our competition terms and conditions here.

Send us your tree before the 31st January to be in with a chance of winning one of our fabulous prizes, including a year’s subscription to Findmypast, and a personal tutorial with one of our expert genealogists!

Findmypast Tree Awards Criteria

NB: Please clearly state which category you are entering your tree for in the subject line of your entry email. You are free to send us an explanation of your tree, no longer than 300 words, in the email with the link to your tree attached.

Beginner Trees

[Started after 11am on 27th December 2014]

Best Newcomer

We’re looking for someone who’s really made the most of their first month working on their family tree. You could either work to ensure really comprehensive research on just a few generations, or see simply how far back you can get! We’ll check how many ancestor’s you’ve added to your tree (correctly – no made-up cousins please!), and you’ll also get credit for the level of detail you manage to include.

Prize: a year's Findmypast World subscription PLUS a year's subscription to Who Do You Think You Are Magazine

 A Great Family Tree

Have you found all your grandparents in the records? How about all your great-grandparents? Your great-great-grandparents? Find ALL of them (or as close to a full set per generation as possible) within the month, and you could be in with a chance of winning one of our beginner tree awards.

Prize: a year's Findmypast World subscription PLUS a a session with an expert genealogist

Advanced Trees

[You can have worked on yours for any length of time. Trees created on other websites are welcome too – just make sure that if you’ve created it elsewhere that you upload it to Findmypast via Gedcom so that we can view it here!]

The Best-Sourced Family Tree

We’re looking for the most thorough researcher out there! Does your family tree span continents and centuries? Have you used a variety of different record sets, scoured the military archives, wills, and crime records? Is your tree illustrated in diverse ways – including photos, certificates, newspaper and clippings? Have you interviewed your relatives, and tried verifying or disproving any of those family myths? We’re looking for breadth and resourcefulness. You could be our winner this year!

Prize: a year's Findmypast World subscription PLUS a session with an expert genealogist

The Best-illustrated family tree

We want a tree with style. Not just the number of images uploaded – though that is an important element which we will take into account, but also the variety and quality of your illustrations. Interesting newspaper clippings would count here too!

Prize: a year's Findmypast World subscription PLUS a a 3 month Findmypast World subscription to pass on to a friend.
